Split house share bills without chasing flatmates
In a UK flatshare, one person may pay the energy direct debit while another covers broadband. Track what each housemate actually paid, agree on each person's share, then settle a single monthly balance.
First, separate rent from the shared bills
Read the tenancy and bill statements so you do not charge a housemate twice for something already included in rent. Make a short list of costs the group pays together: electricity or gas, water, broadband and common cleaning supplies. Personal streaming plans and private purchases stay outside the house ledger.
Choose a rule for each cost. Fixed broadband is easy to divide equally among users; if someone joins or leaves mid-month, agree on a partial-period amount. Keep a note of that agreement next to the bill.
Worked example: £180 of shared costs
Three flatmates agree to an equal split. Sam pays energy, Priya pays broadband, and Lee pays water and supplies.

Check Council Tax separately
Council Tax is not just another utility bill: who is responsible and whether a discount or exemption applies can differ by household. In England, full-time students may be disregarded for the bill.
