How to split utility bills with roommates
Electricity, internet and household supplies rarely arrive on the same day. A simple written rule and one shared balance keep your apartment from turning into a stack of payment reminders.
Agree on the bill rule before the first payment
- List the bills your apartment actually shares: electricity, water, internet and any communal supplies. Leave personal subscriptions out.
- Choose who is included in each bill. An internet plan might be split evenly, while a bill covering a move-in date may need a custom share.
- Keep rent separate if bedrooms differ. Use the rent split calculator to compare equal and room-size methods, then agree on a figure.
- Record who paid each bill and settle the net balance at the end of the month instead of sending a payment for every receipt.
Worked example: three roommates, one monthly balance
Alex pays electricity, Blair pays internet, and Casey buys supplies. All three agreed to split these shared costs equally.

Keep the agreement useful after move-in
Pick one date to review balances, such as the day after the final utility bill arrives. Keep the bill period, payer and amount visible to everyone. If the household changes, agree on the new split before the next bill is due.
